PASSIVE SOLAR RETROFITTING OF A NEW UNIVERSITY BUILDING

Ziel

To demonstrate that a combination of solar passive and storage techniques can reduce total annual energy demand for heating and cooling of the buildings by between 30 and 70%, corresponding to a total annual energy saving of +- 200 toe.
The construction of the solar roof is completed. Also the inter-seasonal storage, consisting of an array of five 40 m. long P.V.C. pipes burried approximately 1.5 m. under the atrium floor, is largely completed. The latent short term heat storage is left out from the project, as it is too complicated and has shown (in specialized litterature) in the mean time to be inefficient.
The project consists of:
- a collection system which is a combination of a solar greenhouse ( 700 m2, 260 Mwh/yr) covering the building courtyard and simple air collectors (140 m2, 35 Mwh/yr).
- a heat transfer system using mainly the building existing air ducts .
- a heat storage system combining deep ground storage for interseasonal use and a latent heat storage matrix for daily use.
- a microprocessor control unit.
The system has two operating modes for Summer and Winter including interseasonal periods.
During Summer operation the building air, of which a part passes the air collectors, is sent to the ground storage system consisting of two pvc piping arrays. These heat the surrounding ground (total energy input: 1930 Mwh). The cooled air reenters the building, a part of this air is cooling the ambient air entering the building. During Winter, Autumn and Spring, preheated greenhouse air passes through the solar collectors, the latent heat storage matrix (NA2 SO4/10 H20,264 mwh)to the outside. The ambient air passes through the ground storage system, the heat exchanger and enters the building either directly (> 19 C) or after passing the storage matrix (< 19 C).
For excess heat storage during and Autumn the second pvc pipe array is used.
