RETROFITTING FLUE GAS LATENT HEAT RECOVERY EQUIPMENT IN A MALT DRYING KILN REUSING EXISTING EQUIPMENT AND FLUES

Objectif

Malt drying kilns usually use steam of HPHW heat exchangers to heat the inlet air. In this project a condensing will be fitted to the boiler, reducing flue gases to 40 deg. C and recovering 1900 kW of heat. After condensate is removed the flue gases are reheated to 85 deg. C to ensure the existing economiser is slightly innovative. The reheating stage is unusual and worth demonstration. The recovered heat will be used to preheat kiln inlet air.
Savings in excess of those predicted were achieved.
A new dual fuel high pressure hot water boiler plant is being installed at the Maltings in Athy. When the boilers are being fired on gas a condensing economiser shall be used to recover sensible and latent heat from the products of combustion. In order that mild steel flues can be used downstream of the economiser and efficient plume dispersal is acheived a flue gas reheater has been installed. In the reheater high pressure hot water is used to reheat the flue gases so that they are above the new consideration dew points.
The condensing economiser is a new design from earlier installations with the flue gsa flowing vertically downwards over the tubes. The reheat section is temperature controlled to ensure that the minimum possible energy is used for reheating the flue gases.
The economiser is more expensive than a normal condensing economiser due to the reheat section but this cost is recovered by using or re-using mild steel ductwork and flues.
