DEMONSTRATION OF 25 KWH FUEL CELL SYSTEMS IN EUROPE

Obiettivo

The demonstration of completely newly designed fuel cell systems in Europe.
The fuel cell stack in Delft was damaged beyond repair by an accident. It was decided to replace it by a unit, to be put into operation in 1991 at Delft.
The already approved contribution has been based on one demonstration unit rather than on the three units. It is proposed to increase the support in order to take into account :
1) Additional operational/maintenance cost for the 3 units (3 MECU);
2) That the fuel cell stacks, now supplied by Fuji (Japan), are more expensive (1,155 MECU). Basis is a fuel cell stack, produced by Fuji Electric Co., of the phosphoric acid type (25 kW) and a fuel processor designed and build by KTI. Fuel cell stack and fuel cell processor are highly integrated, resulting in an net high overall system efficiency (target efficiencies : 37-39%). Successful demonstration of three consecutive units has to initialise the commercialisation on longer term, where by a European company or consortium is projected, supplying commercial systems on the market. The complete project consists of design, construction and execution of an extensive measurement program of three fuel cell systems, all based on phosphoric acid fuel cell technology. The first demonstration plant is currently ready for commissioning and start-up in Holland. The second third unit will be installed in Holland and Italy, respectively. The three demonstration units will produce a learning effect, on basis of which a final commercial design can be produced.
This proposal is related to supported project EE/398/86/NL.
