TIME-TO-DEPTH CONVERSION AND VELOCITY ESTIMATION BY NON-LINEAR INVERSION IN COMPLEX GEOLOGICAL AREAS

Cel

The aim of the project will be to demonstrate the ability of Geophysical Inversion, constrained by Geological information, on field data from the North Sea and Onshore Europe. The two major applications of Geophysical Inversion can be identified, which both have been developed into software systems at Jason :
1. "DSite" : Time-to-depth conversion (TDC) of complex subsurface structures by inversion of interpreted seismic horizons, constrained by geologic information and well data.
2. JGW ("Jason Geoscience Workbench") : "JGW-Integrate", "JGW-CSSI" and JGW-Invermod" : Reservoir characterization by inversion of seismic traces (recordings). The reservoir characterization may be done in terms of Acoustic Impedance, and, in conjunction with well data, in terms of Lithology/rock parameters (such as density, velocity, gamma ray response, porosity, permeability, net pay). The inversion is constrained by well data and geologic information.
The conclusions are basically that both DSite and JGW yield high-accuracy results, and that the applications are commercially feasible.
D-Site :
The results of the demonstrations were very positive. An accuracy can be obtained that cannot be obtained with traditional TDC techniques. The main reason for this higher accuracy is that DSite handles the refracted waves in complex structures and is able to estimate the velocity structure at the same time. The more complex the geology, the more added value the technique has. DSite is a commercial product of Jason, of which licenses have been sold to several oil companies and which Jason uses to provide processing services to Oil companies on a commercial basis.
JGW :
The major reason for the success has been the accuracy within the seismic bandwidth, and the ability to predict the lower frequencies as well. Acoustic Impedance models defined in both the low frequencies and the seismic frequencies are essential, to be able to calculate reservoir parameters such as porosity. Application of JGW/Invermod has shown that not only the low frequencies and the seismic frequencies can be estimated, but that also fine-scale heterogeneities, with a frequency content higher than the seismic, can be modelled.
JGW is a commercial product of Jason, of which a large number of licenses have been sold to Oil companies since the introduction of its initial modules 2 years ago. Jason also provides data processing services with JGW on a commercial basis.
The project demonstrates the use of the various inversion techniques developed by Jason, to show on which type of data which technique can be best used.
The data processing may be carried out at the oil companies or at Jason. In the first case, Jason may carry out additional processing to complete the results for the benefit of this demonstration. In all cases, the data sets are to be provided by the oil companies.
