Objetivo The demonstration of a retrofit of apartment houses, focusing on the facade. A sun room with a new type of integrated solar collector will be demonstrated. The installations for heating, ventilation and domestic hot water will be integrated in a compact area in the sun room. Innovative aspects are :- a cheap type of integrated solar collector, covered with transparent insulation- technical equipment in and along the facade- tenants stay in their home during the retrofit. The aim of the project has not been reached. The market for sun rooms and active solar systems is low, due to high price levels. Budgets for retrofits of apartment buildings have been cut low.1. Innovative technologya. The solar collector is part of the individual domestic hot water system. The ICS-type collector contains 160 liters of fresh water and acts as a pre-heater. The collector is covered with a layer of "honeycomb" transparent insulation. The ICS is integrated in the facade. Apartment buildings (without individual roof space) can thus be provided with a solar system.b. The balcony is turned into a sun room. The sun room has 3 functions :- to protect part of the building structure against rain and low temperatures- to preheat fresh air- to provide room for an installation zone, containing a gas boiler, a (balanced) forced ventilation unit and a heater for domestic hot water.3. Economic aspectsThe sun room and solar system is more expensive than the usual approach. The extra cost will provide more comfort and save fossil fuel. Tenants highly appreciate the extra comfort of a sun room. The facade approach will substitute some cost: no retrofit of the structure that is protected now, lower cost for interior decoration. The economic value of this extra quality is expected to be enough for successful market introduction. The energy saving of the retrofit is 1 TOE for each apartment, which amounts 40%.In the design stage of the project, the financial position of housing institutions changed. The budget for retrofits were cut. Financial problems occurred, especially for housing institutions with apartment buildings. It is difficult to finance the type of retrofit that was to be demonstrated.4. MonitoringMonitoring will take place in occupied houses, during two years.
