TEST PROGRAMME FOR THE WEBTRAC TOOL FOR HORIZONTAL AND EXTENDED REACH DRILLING

Objective

The main aim of the project is to test new downhole mechanics. The function of the mechanics is to establish traction. The technique is integrated in a downhole tractor.
The results of the previous tests and technical input from P.E.S.is in possession form the basis of production of a tractor prototype which is expected to be capable of giving sufficient tensile force. Especially, the electronics are designed in a way that the tractor can be supplied with sufficient energy and the most essential parameters in the tractor can be controlled from the surface.
The downhole tractor is based on a completely new concept. A tool of this kind has never before been tested in the field. The tractor uses a novel technique, which has been tested in the laboratory. The tool is protected by two patents.
The tractor has the potential to create significant cost savings in many areas, both offshore and onshore.
The downhole tractor is believed to have the potential to double the industry's capability for both horizontal and highly deviated extended reach wells. They use a novel technique which has applications not only for horizontal and extended reach drilling, but also for conventional drilling.
