DEMONSTRATION PROJECT FOR DUOBUS LINE IN COPENHAGEN WITH NEW TYPE OF ALTERNATING CURRENT TRACTION SYSTEM

Cel

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the use of a new technical concept for alternating current traction system for duo-buses. These duo-buses will be in operation on a demonstration line in the Centre of Copenhagen.

The electric traction will cover a total length of 3.4 km, starting from Norreport Station and running through dense inner-city areas as well as more open avenues. The alignment is idealy suited for experiments with regard to wire hanging and pylons. Two duo-buses will be tested on this alignment which will have 30 min. intervals.
The two duo-buses will be equipped with both a diesel engine and an electric engine. When driving in densely populated areas with high traffic density the duo-bus uses its electric engine. The power is supplied from overhead wires. Outside the central areas the diesel engine is turned on and the duo-bus continues as a conventional diesel bus.
The two duo buses will be designed, produced and ready for tests by 1 June, 1993.
The electric traction system will similarly be designed and established and ready for tests by the same date. The test period will be 12 months.
During the test period a comprehensive evaluation programme will be carried out, includingi.e. the following parameters:
- energy onsumption
- emissions
- noise
- maintenance and repair costs
- passenger service
- reliability and regularly of the system
- traffic flow conditions
- asethetics and neighbouring conditions.
The results will be compared to a duo-bus system using direct-current traction as electric drive (Essen, Germany), and with the ordinary diesel bus system in Copenhagen.
The results of the project will be disseminated in the following ways :
- Current coverage of the demonstration project by radio and TV
- Reports written in German and English will be distributed to bus companies in the European cities
- Polders, telling about the demonstration project, will be distributed to passengers travelling with the Copenhagen City and REgional Transport (HT)
