REALIZATION OF A 1,5 MW WIND FARM IN PIANO PATERTE (ABRUZZ0)

Objectif

The aim of this project is to design, install and operate a first wind farm (five M30A and one M30S1 WTGs, 250 kW rated power each) at Piano Paterte, located on Apennine mountains at 900 m above sea level, so to acquire experience about the following aspects :
* the operational characteristics of the 250 kW single bladed wind turbines, models M30A and the more recent M30S1, with particular reference to the energy productivity;
* the management of the wind farm, with special reference to climate conditions and to accessibility to the installation site;
* the technical aspects connected with the supply of energy to the national grid.
The acquired experience will allow the dissemination of results, in order to promote further wind farm development.
Design, construction, assembly and starting phases completed. Within the construction phase the wind turbines are ready for shipping.
The project presents the following innovative aspects :
- the installation of up-scaled 250 kW M30A and the more recent M30S1 wind turbines in the wind farm;
- the selected site gives the opportunity to gain experience on particular problems connected with : high and turbulent winds, climate conditions, accessibility, integration of the wind farm in the society and environment;
- the M30A and M30S1S wind turbines have many specific advantages for this kind of environmental conditions :
. installation favoured by the low weight of the machine, with equal dimensions, hence with equal energy produced; . high reliability under turbulent conditions, thanks to the flexible structure (hypercritical tower and flapping hub) of the one-blade equipment;
. visual integration of the wind farm favoured by the particular slenderness of one-blade equipment.
Most of the Italian territory has an interesting wind resource in the mountain, therefore, the typology of this project can be extended to other Italian regions in view of the aims foreseen by the National Energy Program (300-600 wind MW by the year 2000).
The main condition for this program is a substantial reduction in the installed machine cost, which is possible only by a market expansion. This will allow not only to profit by scale economies, but also by technology optimisation. The single-bladed typology is at its first development steps and has a great potential of cost reduction.
The program for the realization of a 1,5 MW wind park in this site is divided into four phases :
Phase I - Design
Phase II - Construction of wind turbines
Phase III - Assembly and starting
Phase IV - Evaluation.
The average wind speed is 5,5 m/s during the monitoring period 1992 - 1996.
The energy production obtained by one M30A unit, installed in a former project, was 312 MWh in one year. Considering the WTG optimisation, which was carried out in 1995, the energy yield estimation is about 350 MWh/year. This figure leads to a totalenergy production of the wind farm of 2100 MWh/year.
Value of annual production : P = 2100 MWh x150.000 Lit=315 Millions Lit.
Total project investment : I = 5.566 Millions Lit.
Operation & Maintenance : O = 90 Millions Lit.
