5000 KW ADVANCED HYDROGEN ELECTROLYSIS PLANT

Cel

Industrial scale advanced electrolysis plant for production of high purity hydrogen.
The proposer has developed with CEC-help, smaller scale electrolyser units saving 25% of electricity as compared to conventional units.
It is proposed to increase the unit size by a factor of 2,5 and to group 28 of these bigger units to a plant with nominal input of 5 MWE and a production of 1250 m3/h of hydrogen.
Innovation : Increase of scale of already commercialised modules and grouping of these modules to fully automatic hydrogen production plant.

A 5000 kW electrolysis plant with an annual production of 10 million Nm3 hydrogen, using high-efficiency electrolyser cells developed under a E.E.C. - DG XII programme and currently commercialized by HYDROGEN SYSTEMS NV (Belgium). The electrolyser cells have an overall efficiency of over 90%.
The annual energy consumption will be 40 GWh.
The plant will be operating for 8000 hrs/year.
The hydrogen produced in this plant will directly be sold on the chemical feedstock market. The plant will produce 10 million Nm3 non-fossile hydrogen gas, equivalent to 3000 ton oil per year. Compared with 25% of electric energy will be saved, due to the high efficiency of the cells.
In the CEE-report "Prospects for hydrogen from advanced water electrolysis" (P. Glynn - 1986 - EUR 10290 EN) it is assumed that half of the electrolysis capacity will be replaced in the period 1990-2000 and that hydrogen demand in the speciality market will grow at 5% per year. Advanced electrolysis will capture 50% of the small speciality market and 25% of the large speciality market. Total cost of the project : 211.4 million BF of which 119.9 million BF are eligible costs.
The proposed 5000 kW demonstration plant will have a payback time of approximately 12 years, with current market prices for hydrogen and electricity.
Larger hydrogen electrolysis plants (100-200 MW) are likely to become profitable without financial support, due to scale effects, both on plant and electricity prices.
