ABRASIVE JET CUTTING SYSTEM FOR DECOMMISSIONING

Obiettivo

The final aim of this project is to develop, built, experiment and validate an abrasive jet cutting system suitable for platform decommissioning, replacement or repair which could also be applied to any subsea pipelines or flowlines cutting.
This project will allow to develop a remotely controlled system, potentially operated in full robotic mode which will be deployed without diver assistance within the above described scope of work.
The project aim is to bring a new product and its associated operating procedures on the market.
4 types of abrasive jet cutters have been developed, for two types of works :
- underwater modules designed for standard casing assemblies cutting: 9", 13" and 20" (often grouted to a 30" tubing).
- underwater modules designed for pile cutting. Selected size of pile was 54" with a wall thickness of 63 mm.
All these tools have first been tested in our pool facilities and then have been used during our offshore validation (real case of platform decommissioning). We had to face the on site reality which was far from the theory (hard drilling mud between tubes, non existing concrete between 20" and 30" casings...).
The integrated container system has also been validated. The efficiency and more of all the reliability of our 700 bar Diajet appeared now enough satisfactory for offshore use.
The present project is basically the continuation of previously supported project nr. OG./00219/90/FR which was split in two phases:
PHASE ONE: cutting capabilities and efficiency upgrading
PHASE TWO: definition of equipment and procedures
Present project programme is :
- develop, fabricate and validate through shallow water and offshore tests a new abrasive jet cutting subsea deployment system able to cope with the cutting requirements linked to a medium size jacket platform dismantling or removal. Offshore validation should be performed in 25 to 200 m water depth on a full scale mock-up representing this type of jacket leg configuration.
The project is split in the following phases :
PHASE THREE : design and fabricate a versatile deployment system(s)
(1992/1993)
- for scale one operation
- for validation in shallow water on mock-up structure
PHASE FOUR : deep water offshore validation
(1993/1994)
POTENTIAL FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
- concrete demolition inside grouted steel piles. This technique could also be applied to concrete removal on concrete coated pipes.
