Development of the use of permanent meadows of the Alpine mountains to improve quality of the products of breeding and to maintain the environment

Obiettivo

On either side of the border, the high valleys of the French and Italian Alps have much in common in terms of history, geography, climate, agriculture, and their economies. Their handicaps are considerable, in that small areas of agricultural land are often difficult of access and there is a short growing season for the vegetation. The agriculture of these areas is dependent on the production of high quality dairy products and beef, together with a dependence on tourism and a corresponding need to maintain the environment.

The object is to characterize the variability of the meadows in these Alpine regions, with regard to their agricultural and environmental functions and management practices necessary to maintain them. It should be possible to build models for the proper exploitation and care of these meadows. The programme will be carried out in the central valley of the Aosta valley in Italy and in the Internal valleys (Maurienne and Tarentaise) and the external pre-Alps of the French Alps of the north.

In the Aosta valley, 4 types of meadow vegetation and agricultural practices have been characterized with particular reference to their productivity and the nutritional value of the forage has been assessed. A manual is being written to disseminate the results. In the external French pre-Alps, available information on the permanent meadows has been synthesized. Owing to the large area involved it was necessary to divide the territory into small areas for study.
