EUROFOODS-ENFANTS PROJECT

Objective

1. Primary objective:

- To establish a comparable and compatible system of high quality data on food consumption and food composition, which can be used in the formulation of food and nutrition policy and for studying the relationship between diet and health.
Research was carried out in order to establish a comparable and compatible system of high quality data on food consumption and food composition, which can be used in the formulation of food and nutrition policy and for studying the relationship between diet and health.

The following results were achieved:
development of guidelines for the collection and presentation of data for the compilation of European food balance sheets;
development of guidelines and a proposal for improvement and harmonization of food data in household budget surveys in Europe;
publishing of an updated inventory of European studies on individual dietary food intake in 1993;
development of the Eurocode food coding system (an updated version of the code, a list of descriptive facets and a manuel for using the code have been prepared and the code was translated from English into 8 other European languages);
development of testing procedures for the usefulness of the Lingual food coding system in a European context;
publishing of a manuel on the production, management and use of food composition data;
development and distribution of questionnaires on the assessment of data for an inventory of software for use with nutrient databases and for an inventory on the availability of data in nutrient databanks;
development of the European nutrition information management system (EuroNIMS) involving a proposal to implement the system (Lingual and Eurocode will be incorporated into the EuroNIMS database);
submission of a proposal to the AAIR Programme for the analysis of foods in Southern European countries;
issue of a special edition of the newsletter and preparation of a poster.
2. Secondary objectives:

- To provide information on food supplies, dietary patterns and the intake of nutrients and of non-nutrients;

- To elaborate a European uniform food coding system in order to exchange food composition data efficiently;

- To construct a network of compatible food composition databases with the quality required for interpretation of the results.
