Development of automated systems in connection with the integration of operations management and of production planning in a rolling mill unit at the Taranto Steel Centre: Ergonomic design of the new workplaces

Ziel

Background:

The research project involves the rolling mill unit. It deals with the 'storage of chipped blooms'. This area is to be the subject of a process of technological and organizational restructuring as part of the company's plans to increase efficiency. In particular, the introduction of a new automation system for the integration of the functions of production and the programming of production will have a considerable impact on two new workplaces in the rolling mill cycle, namely the strip mill coordinator and the crane operator.

The study is based on the hypothesis that the workplaces can be analysed using the human operator model proposed by Rasmussen (1986). The hypothesis was that the work activities are characterized by various combinations of skill-based, rule-based and knowledge-based behaviour. The analysis of the cognitive modes required of operators therefore makes it possible to establish the main ergonomic requirements for consideration in the optimum design of workplaces. Consequently, the working party has decided to:

establish the cognitive characteristics of the new job profiles created as a result of the introduction of highly automated processes into the steelmaking cycles;

draft specific ergonomic recommendations at the design stage;

identify criteria for training programmes and programmes for assessing operator performance;

identify parameters for checking operator reliability which can be used at the implementation stage so that improvements can be made, if necessary, to the automated systems introduced.
