Objective The aim of this research is to study the ergonomic design of a prototype expert system to diagnose and classify surface defects in rolled sheet steel. General aspects of the work are: To identify the concepts and rules used by operators in the diagnosis and classification of defects. To identify any differences between 'automatic' modes and 'controlled' modes of defect recognition. To identify ways of converting knowledge to organization which take account of experience.
