PRRS : EPIDEMIOLOGY AND CONTROL (WITH EMPHASIS ON DIAGNOSIC, VIRAL PERSISTENCE, EXTENT OF VIRAL DIVERSITY, ANTI-VIRAL IMMUNITY, AND MODES OF TRANSMISSION)

Objective

Objectives:
a) Establish a serum bank of seropositive field sera, originating from various regions of the EC, to provide valuable material for validating any future test and also allow examination of different isolates for serotypic variation: collection of serum from animals that have recovered from Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrom (PRRS), screening for antibody titres in sera of well described breeding and fattering herds.
b) Prepare a collection of primary isolates, originating from various regions of the EC. Of the Artiriviridae EAV and SHFV, it is known that various biotypes exist which vary in virulence and in the tendency to cause persistent infection. Therefore, it is important to isolate virus from cases where the method of transmission is unknown. Furthermore, the isolates need to be catalogued and stored under appropriate conditions, including freeze- drying of archive material.
c) Study the presence and distribution of Lelystad virus in meat and other pig organs: virus isolation and immuno-histochemical studies on tissue of experimentally infected pigs to investigated the route of infection and the presence of the virus.
d) In the future, assuming monoclonal antibody panels become established, hold a workshop to compare reactivities and assemble an EC panel for differentiation. That the virus will ultimately be sequenced, whereupon comparison and exchange of oligonucleoitide primers would prove valuable.
