Material science and reliability of optical fibres and cables

Cel

COST 218 focusses on material and reliability problems of optical fibres and cables.
Reliability and ageing problems of the fibre as installed in a certain cable and duct environment have been studied. With respect to the large number of existing cable designs and installation methods, many problems can arise, some of them being of common interest, others not, according to the individual techniques used in each country.
Reliability and ageing problems of the fibre when installed in a cable- and duct-environment are to be studied. To the large number of existing cable designs and installation methods mean many problems can arise, some of them being of common interest, depending on individual techniques used in each country. Therefore at the beginning of this COST project it was decided to concentrate on:

- fibre mechanical strength, stress corrosion, geometry, hydrogen effect
- coatings primary and secondary coatings, special coatings, coating adhesion and stripability, degradation
- filling degradation, influence on fibres and coatings compounds
- strength hydrogen effects, mechanical degradation members
- cable moisture penetration, degradation by UV radiation, rodent attack, sheaths resistance to lubricants.
- joining performance of new cheap and quick splicing and connecting techniques .
- cable laying performance of special cable laying techniques for indoor and outdoor applications.

Subdivision of work among participant countries

The participating countries are Denmark, Finland, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. Besides the official members various experts and observers take part in the meetings.

WORK PLANNED

During the last meeting, the M.C. agreed to focus on carbon coated fibres, indoor cable applications and comparison of cable test methods, test equipment and specifications.

Philips has offered to supply carbon coated fibre for common mechanical and environmental tests, but unfortunately these have not yet been received.
