Information flow on food technology, food safety and healthy eating to SME's and consumers ("the FLAIR-Flow Project")

Objetivo

The dissemination of results from CEC sponsored R&D food programmes is vital for both the European food industry and consumers. The information must be "tailored" for the target group in question and its dissemination must be quick, concise and accurate.

The project will therefore explore/investigate existing and new national routes and procedures in EC and COST States for the dissemination of information on food technology, food safety and "healthy" eating to SMEs and consumers and to use these and other channels to disseminate relevant data from the FLAIR programmes.

Participating institutions from Member Countries :B, D, DK, E, F, GR, IRL, UK
Interested Third Countries : A, N, S, SF

This project also belongs to the EC research and development programme, FLAIR.

CURRENT STATUS

In the past the results from EC and European food R&D programmes have scarcely been passed on to SMEs, consumers and even scientists. The project will tackle the dissemination issue "head on" and the result will be a more effective flow of information benefitting industry and consumers alike.

Relevant information on food technology, food safety and healthy eating from the FLAIR and also the COST 91bis programme will be disseminated through a range of channels to SMEs and consumers in all EC States and in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Austria, totalling 15 states in all. It is also intended to study/analyse/assess/recommend dissemination methods which might be suitable under different circumstances - i.e. information that can be used to disseminate the results of future programmes. Likewise, the project will analyse and assess the effectiveness of alternative ways of checking the efficiency of the dissemination process.

Information will be aimed at SMEs, consumers and policy makers. It will be generated by the FLAIR and COST 91bis programmes. COST 91bis is now completed and information on chilled foods, aspects of food biotechnology and on extrusion cooking and HTST treatments of foods is available. In FLAIR there are 22 cost-shared projects and 11 concerted projects (some with a number of sub-divisions), including this project. The R&D results of these will be summarised in a form suitable for dissemination to SMEs, consumers and policy-makers and it will be disseminated via national networks and existing data bases and also via national and international workshops. Existing channels will be used, where possible, to disseminate the information, e.g. food industry newsletters, consumer bulletins, databases, etc.
