Objetivo The aim is to monitor and analyse the procedures, causes and consequences of the development by European and non-European companies of express delivery services in Europe. Generally speaking, the development of express delivery services undoubtedly has positive aspects, such as improved quality of service, lowering of relative price levels, and increasing traffic flows to satisfy growing demand. However, there remains a question mark over the excessive concentration in the sector and the tendency towards oligopoly. As regards the transport-related aspects of the subject, the technical and economic problems to which express delivery services are prone are of particular interest. The issues include market segmentation, organisation of modal complementary, transport plan structures, role of data processing, standardisation of packaging, mechanisation of handling, standardisation of procedures and rates, and the respective advantages of correspondence agreements between networks and integration into a single network.Current statusThe first phase consisted of examining the situation and prospects with respect to express delivery services in Europe : the nature and dynamics of express delivery markets ; the role and the technical and commercial strategy of customers and operators. A distinction was drawn between national and European operators and non-European integrators (competitors and partners). The second phase, to draw economic and policy conclusions from these analyses. A questionnaire, relating to the development of the sector and the regulatory framework, policy aspects, environmental impact and land-use planning, was completed in each country by professional organisations. The research in each State participating in the Action was coupled with related research at European and international level. In this sense, the third part of the Action focused on the attitude of the European Commission and the international associations.
