Trophic capacity of an estuarine ecosystem : Determination of biological criteria for the management of cultivated populations of oysters and their socio economical consequences.

Ziel

The estuarine bay of Marennes-Oleron is the first basin for oyster culture in Europe with 2.500 enterprises creating nearly 8.000 jobs. The augmentation of cultivated stocks (90.000 tons) produce a decrease of the growth rate and an increase of the mortalities imperilling the survivorship of the familial enterprises. The objective of this study is to define the carrying capacity of that bay and the management which can be proposed. An analytical model will permit by simulating variations of the biomasses and the cultivated species to predict the growth profit. This model will also allow the realisation of spatial management of cultures in relation with the hydrodynamic and the area and the primary production. This model will analyse the trophic competition between the cultivated species (oysters, mussels, clams) and the main trophic competitions (cockles, crepidula). The impact of oysters will be also predicted. In a parallel, the building of an economical model will simulate the impact of the proposed mana ement to regulate the stock, on the enterprises and on the general economy of the bay of Marennes-Oleron.

The development of this project will contribute:

To define the energetic laws which permit by a determinist approach to predict the growth of the molluscs function of the quantity and the quality of the particular food - mussels (Mytilus edulis) cockles (Cerastoderma edule), oysters (Crassostrea gigas).

To study the recycling of nutrient which occurred upon oyster or mussel beds.

To build a model of nitrates for the fresh water imputs of the river Charente.

To develop a siltation and resuspension model.

To estimate the contribution of the dissolved organic matter to the mollusc nutrition.

To couple the impact of nutrients, the biological, physical and sedimental models to estimate the carrying capacity of the bay of Marennes-Oleron with the problem of space time which was be resolved.

To elaborate a simultation model including a model of formation of oyster prices and a model production cost in relation with the biological model. It will simulate the economical evolution of the oyster production in function with the different modalities of management.
