Novel approaches in advanced combustion technologies

Objective

A group of european research and industrial companies as well as leading universities work closely together in a targeted project on novel approaches in advanced combustion technologies.
The research programme covers basic laboratory work as well as tests in demonstration and commercial plants.
Characterization of solid fuels investigation of the combustion behaviour, catalytic influence of ash elements, in situ gasification and combustion, influence of pressure on combustion, measurements of gas effluents, hot gas cleaning and more efficient use of flue gases are the main objectives of the research programme. This programme aims at working out scale up criteria for later use in commercial plants.

The project is divided into four major task groups:
1. Advanced NOx control through reburning, injection of different reduction agents, catalytic influence of ash elements.
2. Characterization of solid fuels for atmospheric and pressurized combustion, including combustion of char residues, influence on the combustion behaviour.
3. Atmospheric and pressurized fluidized bed combustion: influence of pressure on combustion, measurement of gas effluents, particle removal in cyclones and ceramic filters through towards real hot gas cleanup; combined combustion of sewage sludge and residues with coal; mineral matter transformation and its impact on slagging; measurement of alkali with new detectors.
4. Modelling tools, new modelling codes will be developed and validated on experimental test equipment.
This project is complementary to JOU2-CT93-0380 and JOU2-CT93-0431.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
