Multinutrient Maize : Multivitamin and multimineral fortified maize for food security

Objective

Multinutrient Maize aims to develop a prototype product to a stage where it can be taken up efficiently by developing countries. The following activities are planned: (a) Feeding trials in small animals to assess the safety and efficacy of the prototype and to expand its scope to include beneficial health applications thus providing added value; (b) human feeding trials in Spain; (c) further experimental field trials in Spain under Spanish regulations to comply with requirements for plant variety protection and registration, and to collect the agronomic and environmental data needed for experimental field trial applications in developing countries by collaborators; and (d) freedom to operate (FTO) analysis to monitor the intellectual property (IP) landscape prior to the release of the prototype maize to collaborators in developing countries. The latter activity will also identify IP constraints that need to be circumvented in a humanitarian context following the Golden Rice model, which has been widely publicized.
