An Introduction to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

Objective

The efficient maintenance of expensive machinery is crucial to the success and overall effectiveness of European manufacturing, process and utility companies. Despite time and money spent on the development and production of advanced plant and equipment, there has not been enough attention to defining comprehensive maintenance strategies, policies and practices. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), as part of a total quality culture, has started to redress that balance. During the last five years TPM has spread from Japan to some of the more progressive industrial companies in Europe.

The purpose of this proposed implementation phase of the project is to build upon, and maximise the dissemination of the research and programme development that took place during the definition phase.

The complete package includes an interactive compact disc (CD-I) and support documents. The disc provides a simple-to use and powerful way of conveying information and interactively assessing the user's understanding: the supporting Executive's Overview, Facilitator's Guide and User's Workbook ensure the subject and practical application of TPM can be focused and put into context.

Our initial trials of the prototype indicate that the encapsulation of material from WCs on the European application of TPM, and presenting it in an exciting and powerful way - using animation, video and interactive question and answer sessions - provides readily accessible materials for all sizes of industrial enterprise who wish to embark on the route towards world class status.
