High quality and energy efficient LED illumination for art

Project description

Innovative lighting systems based on Solid State Lighting (SSL)

The Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's famous "universal judgement" from 1541 is one of the most impressive icons in European art works and is ranked sixth worldwide in the number of visitors with 4.44 million visitors per year.
The illumination of art certainly belongs to one of the most ambitious tasks in interior lighting with respect to requirements towards the light quality. Thus in many museums today, the existing lighting installations lack energy efficiency as it is considered less important compared to lighting quality or design. In this pilot project a consortium of 6 partners from 5 countries plan to demonstrate and prove that both, a superior light quality and high energy efficiency, can be realized. This goal will be reached by replacing the existing illumination system of the Sistine Chapel by latest LED illumination systems developed especially for art.
