Weather INformation Fusion and Correlation for weather and traffic situational awareness

Objective

The WINFC (Weather INformation Fusion and Correlation for weather and traffic situational awareness) project aim at the development of an adaptive data processing module that, once on board, will collect and process information coming from weather and traffic data providers. Such module will be designed in order to collect data, produce an awareness map (integrating weather changes and traffic changes during the aircraft flight) and an update weather map. The awareness map is a risk map that can be used by the pilot to immediately detect hazard conditions no matters whether they depends on weather or traffic changes.
The main project objective is the development of a SW tool implementing data fusion algorithms for the data directly coming from the present and future expected weather information sources with different reliability, accuracy and timeliness aimed to provide in output an objective measurement of the hazard faced by the aircraft input to the trajectory optimization algorithms. The project will develop: the study of the information sources in case of un-forecasted events (weather changes, traffic congestion, runway unavailabilties) a feasibility study of new methods for direct and/or un-direct weather measurement systems based on satellite signals, the data fusion algorithms of the information coming from different sources aimed to get the maximum situational awareness about new un-forecast events, a SW simulation tool for simulating the information delivery from the different sources, the definition of unbiased threat/importance factor(s) to be deployed to the pilot for helping in his decision making process and to be used as weight parameter(s) input in Q-AI trajectory and mission optimization algorithms.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
