Solar Systems and Energy Savings, 1988-1991

Objective

To develop testing procedures and performance evaluation methodologies for solar thermal Systems and energy conservation measures in habitat in support of normative activity and industry.

Progress to end 1990

In the framework of a JRC-ENEA collaboration, a solar passive test cell for mediterranean climates (ARCHIMEDE) has been studied, designed and built on the Ispra site. The experimental programme has been started with calibration procedures.

Contribution to DGXII project PASSYS in tasks Test Site Management (covering instrumentation, test procedures and building components) and Methodologies. The development of test methodologies for passive test cells has resulted in two software programs based on ARMAX and lumped model techniques.

A database with experimental data sets obtained from the passive solar test cells has been set up for model validation purposes.

In collaboration with European experts (France, Belgium, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands) an investigation into the meaning of model parameters and their links to physical phenomena has been undertaken.

Concerning dissemination, a joint workshop has been organized in collaboration with DG XII on passive cooling and a meeting on "bioclimatic architecture" has been organized for the regional order of architects.

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)

JRC-ENEA collaboration on mediterranean test cell:
Test cell qualification (U-value, ARCH, thermal bridge identification).
Studies, design and construction of passive components (wall, roof, window, screens...).
Heating/cooling computer simulation of thermal aspects.
Simplified data acquisition systems, also via telemonitoring.
Elaboration of normative and standard parameters (energy, daylighting, human factor and thermal comfort), with regional and/or international working groups.
Study and development of combined solar heating/cooling systems with photovoltaic devices especially for mountain refuges, isolated houses (mediterannean Islands).
Development of an energy software tool based on modular techniques and actual informatics techniques.

Short description of evolution of work in 1992

Development of test methodologies of building components for mediterranean climates.
Implementation of telemonitoring data bank and data acquisition systems.
Emphasis application in combined solar heating/cooling PV devices.
To expand dissemination activities.
