To study the performance and deterioration of materials in simulated industrial environments and contribute to physically based modelling with experimental verification to predict behaviour in service. To develop advanced test and assessment methodologies suitable for industrial needs.
Progress to end 1990
Damage identification by thermal emission:
- interesting results obtained applying the thermal emission technique on composite material specimens (carbon epoxy specimens supplied by an aircraft manufacturer) during tensile tests to rupture: a clear evolution of the temperature has been obtained, showing the progress of damage and sequential rupture of groups of fibres.
- the combination of thermal and acoustic emission measurements, difficult with metallic materials (due to the high value of thermal conductivity,they require,for an optimal detection of the thermal emission, strain rates too high to allow also an optimal detection of the acoustic emission) turned out to be easier and effective with composite materials.
- successfull application of real time interferometry on composite specimens for damage mapping.
Club of Utilities:
- The ARTIC project-Phase 1 has been completed with the presentation to the Club members (CEGB, ENEL, Laborelec, MPA), the consequent discussion and the implementation of some modifications of the expert system ARTIC for the evaluation of the residual lifetime of creep damaged components (steam headers). The distribution of its run-time version to the members is delayed by the unavailability of a "properly debugged" release of the run-time version of GOLDWORKS.
- The ARTIC Phase 2 project has been prepared, discussed and approved, but at present it is hampered by the different budget availability among the partners.

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)
Damage Identification: .SP0 - The capabilities of thermal emission for material characterization and damage detection in carbon-epoxy composite materials will be further investigated, on specimens supplied by aircraft manufacturer. Complementary techniques will be applied by JRC (laser holography) and by the industrial partners (UT,XR). A BRITE proposal has also been prepared(Renault, Agusta, D'Appolonia etc).
- The activities on steels will be prosecuted with the aim of implementing a procedure for quantitative creep damage assessment by thermal emission.
Club of Utilities:
- ARTIC-phase 2 foresees improvements and expansions of the ARTIC expert system in terms of accessibility and use of data and knowledge, exploitation of external data bases and computer codes, exploitation of multiple domain experts, uncertainty and imprecision modelling. New partners are likely to join the Club..SP0
