Ergonomics in the design of a centralized gas treatment control station

Objective

The project will identify and consolidate in a design specification the ergonomics requirements to assure the health of the workforce and the safe operation of the Sollac Dunkerque Gas Treatment Installation subsequent to its modernisation and extension.

Ways and Means to Achieve the Work

In order to achieve the objectives the project will:

- set up a multidisciplinary pilot team made up of representatives from the technical and maintenance departments and from among the operators themselves, the works medical officer and ergonomists; working parties will be created as and when required during the different stages of research;

- analyse working routines on the basis of reference situations, using the conventional ergonomics methods:

. operator task analysis according to specific features and to information requirement (cf.DeKeyser 1988);

. analysis of work in normal and disrupted (incidents) operational circumstances (cf.deMontmollin 1988 - Leplat, 1985);

. analysis of working conditions (space, physical environment, etc.);

- perform simulation runs for software development and monitor design (cf.Collier and Talbot, 1989) and use mock-ups for designing consoles and room layout (cf. Foerster, 1989).
