Objective
The project will identify the ergonomic requirements of a diagnostic system for use on the casthouse floor to measure the level of hot metal in the torpedo cars and calculate the levels of metal and slag in the blast furnace.
1. Analysis of the information requirements of workers on the casthouse floor.
2. Analysis of the ergonomics of the workplace.
3. Implementation of the ergonomically oriented diagnostic system.
4. Training of the users (shift managers, opera-tors, chief furnacemen and furnacemen).
Ways and Means to Achieve the Work
The project will be developed around the following key phases.
1. Analysis of the tasks on the casthouse floor and the information requirements of workers on the casthouse floor. This must cover both normal working conditions and emergency situations (i.e. process malfunctions).
2. Analysis of working conditions (workplace ergonomics). This must also cover both normal working conditions and emergencies.
3. At the design stage, concrete criteria for designing the diagnostic system need to be determined on the basis of the preceding analysis, taking particular account of information requirements and communication facilities and methods in the light of the cognitive capacities and the responsibilities of the users.
4. A test or simulation system will be devised to record the responses of users and to make any modifications that may be necessary.
5. At the implementation stage, account will be taken of the experience gained during the analysis of tasks and information requirements, the analysis of working conditions, the findings of the tests and simulations, and the comments made by the workforce during the training and information sessions.
6. When the system is introduced on the casting floor account will be taken additionally, of the ergonomic requirements of the workspace.
