Application of ergonomic principles to mine rescue work

Objective

The work will have the following objectives:

A descriptive, analytical, evaluative and corrective analysis of mine rescue work based on:

a) The psychological "fitness" of the recue men in terms of their resilince to stress (both emotional and operational), their ability under stress to make rational decisions and to complete the required tasks effectively.
b) The organisation and co-ordination of the whole rescue process.
c) The physiological fitness of the rescue men.
d) The equipment used (including the personal protective equipment used by the rescue men) the "ideal" design of a rescue station and logistical (response factor dictated, among other things, by the geographical siting of the rescue station).

Ways and Means to Achieve the Work

The work should be carried out in the following stages:

1. Establishment of contacts with the parties responsible for the BRM (including the Regional Mines Directorate and the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain), the workers' representatives and the rescue workers themselves to seek their cooperation in the running of this project and the dissemination of the results so that this complex type of work can in future be performed more effectively.

2. Drafting of a description of the tasks performed with the help of the ergonomic analyses described.

3. Analytical study of the man-machine system with the help of various ergonomic tools:

3.1. Analysis of the task
3.2 .Creation of a data base for the activity
3.3. Analysis of the man-machine interface
3.4. Analysis of the physical load
3.5. Analysis of the various work microclimates.

4. Joint assessment with the workers of the data obtained for the purpose of implementing them (working groups will be formed and priority given to training in health, safety and ergonomics and the training of trainers.

5. Re-evalutation of the system once it has been corrected.
