Objective
The project will have the following aims:
Reduction of physical stress associated with the mixing of construction materials - particularly working with sacks - by the development of a handling device or appropriate procedures which take into account the range of existing operational factors.
Ways and Means to Achieve the Work
There will be a systematic analysis of existing decentralised supply of construction materials in underground coal mining. The operational parameters will be examined and the individual stress situations will be analysed, documented and evaluated. Stress situations will be studied in terms of posture, time and motion studies, key physiological stresses, environmental stresses and accident hazards.
These findings will be used to draw up specifications for the development of suitable handling devices which will then be built.
Ergonomic studies during trials will check the effectiveness of these measures.
Ergonomically recognised procedures which have also been applied during earlier research will be used, viz.
- heart-rate and body-temperature measurements;
- energy expenditure measurements;
- video taping of movement sequences;
- assessment by specially trained personnel of movement patterns and body posture;
- stress measurement using the NIOSH and Burandt methods;
- investigation of accident rates.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
