Project description
Blockchain boost in Portugal
Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) deliver a potential that allows secured, transparent and user-centric digital services, encourages new and advanced business models and promotes decentralised social innovations. The EU is furthering an integrated approach for their application in various domains. To that end, the EU-funded BIG project intends to seek funding for the expansion of the research and innovation potential of the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. The project will support the establishment of a digital ecosystem that will take advantage of blockchain technologies and design innovation for social good through the hiring of an ERA Chair holder. Moreover, it will support the deployment and testing of blockchain technologies in strategic application domains, aiming to increase Lisbon’s potential as a European high-tech hub for the data economy.
Objective
Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) are transformative and bring about a potential for improvement in the European citizenship and economic growth - enabling decentralised, trusted, transparent, user-centric digital services and stimulate new and improved business models and promote decentralised social innovations. For this purpose, the EC is considering these technologies strategic for the next decades, promoting a holistic approach to their deployment in multiple application domains.
The overall goal of this proposal is to seek funding in order to expand the research and innovation potential of Tecnico – Lisbon contributing to foster a digital ecosystem taking advantage of Blockchain technologies and design Innovation for social Good through the hiring of an ERA Chair aiming at developing a critical mass of interdisciplinary research in deploying and testing blockchain technologies in strategic applications domains aligned with the smart specialization strategy of Portugal and Lisbon. BIG is particularly well suited to leapfrog the increasing potential of Lisbon as a European high-tech hub for the data economy. Powered by events such as the WebSummit Lisbon is developing a highly competitive digital ecosystem of companies that take advantage of the opportunities provided by distributed ledger and blockchain technologies with a focus on design innovation.
BIG will be a campus-wide initiative in blockchain and distributed ledger technologies and design innovation to better integrate Tecnico – Lisbon with the European Research Area (ERA) and, in particular, promote structural changes in the school and improving the participation of its associated ICT research labs LARSyS and INESC-ID in the Horizon 2020 and ESIF programmes.
