INFLUENCE OF THE FOREST BIOMASS GROWN IN FERTILIZED SOIL ON COMBUSTION AND GASIFICATION PROCESSES AS WELL AS ON THE ENVIRONMENT WITH INTEGRATED BIOENERGY PRODUCTION

Objective

The main objectives of this project are to carry out experimental studies of both gasification and combustion under atmospheric and pressurized conditions using biomass from different countries namely Finland, Portugal and Spain to determine the influence of the biomass fertilizing conditions on the processes itself and the impact on the integrated energy production facilities like, for instance, the gas turbine process.

Special attention will be paid to ash behaviour, composition and art of the deposition on the refractory walls under combustion or and gasification conditions when biomass from fertilized soil area in comparison to the biomass from non fertilized areas used as a biofuel.

In order to achieve the cited objectives the R&D project will comprise the following tasks :

Task 1 : Determination of the influence of fertilization on forest biomass composition. Characterisation and selection of samples for combustion and gasification tests.

- Subtask 1.1 : Identification of forest biomass fertilization cases in Finland, Portugal and Spain.

- The objective of this subtask is to identify the demonstration and real cases of forest fertilization experiences in the participant countries. The forestal extension affected by fertilization, types and amounts of fertilizers, fertilization plans as well as the forest species affected will be described. Short rotation forestry plantations will be included in this study.

- Subtask 1.2 : Characterisation and selection of biomass samples.

- This study will give a comparative view on the importance that forest soil fertilization has in the three considered countries and the gains in terms of biomass productivity that are being obtained, as well as in terms of changes in qualitative ash biomass composition when compared to non-fertilized materials.

Task 2 : Influence of biomass fertilization on combustion and gasification.

- Subtask 2.1 : Investigation of the influence of fertilized wood fuels on gaseous emission under different combustion and gasification conditions.

- Subtask 2.2 : Investigation of the influence of fertilized wood fuels on combustion and gasification ash quality product.

Task 3 : Investigation of the influence of fertilized fuels on gas clean up requirements before the gas turbine.

Task 4 : Combustion and gasification process modelling.

Task 5 : Conclusions and recommendations.
