Objective
To improve understanding of liquid or solid compound pool fires and its consequences on plant facility or building as well as on the environment. This will include :
- medium and large-scale experimental studies; tests in a confined or ventilated atmosphere; tests with planned releases into the environment;
- fundamental studies of fire propagation, soot aerosol nucleation, turbulence;
- studies of the water droplet effects upon the thermodynamic consequences of the fire (radiative heat transfer, smoke lowering, ...);
- small-scale studies of the combustion of products that may release toxic and/or corrosive products;
- validation of models or tools which make it possible to carry out studies of atmospheric dispersion;
- modifications and qualifications of standardized methods; links between the small-scale results and the large-scale ones; research into the limits of this approach;
- qualification of the computer calculation codes and evolution of the codes so that the new knowledge acquired by means of the experimental studies may be entered.
This project involves development and qualification of technologies (so as to perform industrial plant safety studies and to improve prevention), and carrying out studies of a more fundamental nature (in order to increase knowledge of the physico-chemical phenomena involved during a fire. Also, the quantification of the releases into the environment and the optimization of the efficiency of certain fire abatement means and extension of the codes qualification field so as to better manage the risk, are the objectives of the project. The inventory of the tasks performed is the study of fire propagation, soot aerosol nucleation, influence of soot aerosols and of water droplets on radiative heat transfers, turbulence induced by the fire, standardized tests (to determine their possible use in defining large-scale tests), combustion of compounds releasing particularly toxic and/or corrosive products by means of medium and large scale experiments, realization of a three-dimensional fire code and its qualification along with the one of zone codes by means of the above-mentioned experiments. Tests (medium and large-scale) using standardized device or apparatus, basic research in support of the comprehension of the phenomena generated by the fire (with or without a mitigating system) modelling and qualification of the codes, theoretical and experimental atmospheric diffusion studies are the main axes of the project.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
