Demonstration of an innovative viable management concept focussed on the reuse of individual subassemblies, parts and materials for returned toner cartridges

Ziel

- Demonstration of the classification and certification process of returned parts for reuse within the manufacturing operations.
- Demonstration of management approach and process results.
- Rank Xerox having the leading edge technology in Europe to demonstrate asset recovery of parts for copier machines but also be applicable for durable goods manufacturers.
- Maximise returns of used toner cartridges to prevent pollution and landfill in order to contribute to a positive ecology impact.
- Economical justification of the logistic process is to be supported by an administration, registration and accounting system.
- To design for reuse (life cycle design).

This project intends to demonstrate the solution for the environmental problem by reusing parts and materials of field returned toner cartridges for copier machines, but is also applicable on reuse of parts for other assembled durable goods within Europe. The project will cover the initial installation of the teardown and assembly facilities, including the manufacturing process and the associated logistic process to return cartridges. On a yearly base a volume of 10 million toner and photoreceptor cartridges are being sold to customers for replacement after 5-30 K copies. Currently the total cartridge returns stand at 1.2 million annually which is approx 5%. The objective of Rank Xerox is to increase the return rate of these cartridges to more than 80% during the next few years. The market for toner cartridges as a consumable product is still growing and is causing the associated environmental problem, which drives Rank Xerox in additional investments for disassembly and assembly facilities in the coming years.
