Management plan for the sustainable use of Lough Gill and environment

Objective

To bring together all parties with an interest in Lough Gill and its catchment with the aim of working out a long term management strategy and plan. To begin the execution of the plan with actions such as data acquisition, education, environmental monitoring, pollution prevention, strict planning controls and some conservation management.

The aims of this project are:
(i) the long term protection of the natural environment of Lough Gill and environs which are recognised as having a landscape of National importance as well as being a National Heritage Area for flora and fauna;
(ii) to manage the waters of the catchment for its salmonid fish stocks, for other wildlife and as an important public water supply by establishing a monitoring programme and controlling activities within the catchment;
(iii) to encourage management of the broad-leaved woodlands of the islands and lake shore for wildlife and amenity by removing non-native species and beginning planting the next generation of trees;
(iv) to bring together a diverse number of government and non-governmental organisations with a common interest in the catchment but who currently may have conflicting objectives;
(v) to educate one another and the general public about the value of this great natural resource by creating nature trails, an interpretative facility, training personnel to guide nature walks and give nature talks, and publishing a brochure and technical reports;
(vi) to boost environmentally friendly tourism in n-w Ireland;
(vii) to create new high quality jobs in environmental management and tourism with the appointment of a Conservation Manager, Warden etc.
