Raising the awareness of alternative fuels for public transport in urban areas

Ziel

This proposal is concerned with two major themes:
(a) Awareness raising in the context of some of the barriers to greater public acceptance of alternative fuels and;
(b) Study of operational difficulties by means of a demonstration. A international seminar would be organised to disseminate findings.

The transport sector is both a major consumer of energy, accounting for around 20%, and a major producer of atmospheric pollution. There are great differences between the efficiencies of alternative modes of transport with regard to fuel consumed and emissions produced. Transport policy has a major role to play in encouraging a switch to more efficient modes so contributing to the sustainable development of the urban area. This project is concerned with awareness raising in the context of some of the barriers to greater public acceptance of alternative fuels. It also looks at some operational aspects of alternative fuels for transport (with the emphasis on gas), supported by a small demonstration in the service sector using Newcastle upon Tyne as a case-study. The project concludes by formulation recommendations, at the city level, that will induce more favourable travel behaviour in terms of energy and the environment and lead to the wider use of alternative fuels.
