New electronic technologies to reduce noise pollution for a better employment of urban space and a mixed use of them

Objective

The aim of the project is to design, produce and test an outdoor noise reduction system. This will promote the use of areas which, because of high levels of noise pollution, are normally unutilized, allowing for a multiple employment of space usually restricted because of traffic and other noise sources.

The project is localized in two Italian sample cities, characterized by different types of noise pollution, where the high level of urban noise is the cause of serious damage to the urban environment.
Before realizing the system, a set of noise measurements will be carried out to examine the characteristics of the various urban noise sources. To create the desired state of noise reduction, an electro-acoustic system will be used.
This system eliminates the existing noises by superimposing a suitable acoustic field, called cancelling process, upon the existing one, determining the desired effect of noise reduction.
The project will be carried out according to the following steps:
1) analysis of the samples taken from various urban nosies;
2) realization of the device which estimates and generates the aforementioned cancelling process (a digital signal processor on which an original adaptive estimation algorithm is implemented);
3) realization of the prototype and laboratory testing;
4) testing of the system in different sites of the sample cities: the suburbs and the cities' centers.
This innovative noise reduction system will give relief to communities plagued by various noise pollution sources which derive from traffic, road construction, construction sites, train and tram lines, etc.
