Objective The project aims to demonstrate practical approaches to reducing the adverse environmental effects of local accessible transport. Foreseen results include proven practical advice on converting, maintaining and operating mixed small accessible bus fleets to alternative less polluting fuels; and co-ordinated booking systems to integrate transport and trip end activities (health, community services, etc). There are a variety of small bus operations providing accessible local transport for mobility handicapped people. These operations require better co-ordination, alternative fuels and more efficient despatching to reduce the environmental impact of giving essential access to health, community, employment and other activities. The demonstration project has 5 main areas of activity: development of electric minibuses and their effective use; the same for natural gas minibuses; improved despatching computer technology; integration of resources and approaches of the responsible organisations; and dissemination of findings. Using the experience of operating the innovative Camden Plusbus for community and health purposes, incorporation of less polluting fuel into the fleet (assisted by technical partners), further development of computer scheduling, the project will demonstrate the viability of combining accessible bus design with cleaner technologies and operations; and how extending integration of municipal, community and health transport could offer user choice with less duplication of resource use. Experimentation would include vehicle safety and emissions tests; driver practice; efficiency of computer-aided scheduling; accessibility and user surveys; and changes in routing, spontaneous demand and integrated services. The WHO Healthy Cities network, the Community Transport Association and other national/international links would be used to disseminate the results to influence practical action in other urban areas.
