Objective To establish and implement a demonstration project under the Life centre for river restoration on restoration of stream headwaters and their close connection to the riparian areas with special emphasis on nature conservation, resulting in a restoration of highly important habitats in an area of the utmost national importance. The demonstration project will be carried out during a 3-year period and will include a physical and a monitoring part. The physical work will raise the groundwater table and change the present straight headwater channel back to a meandering stream thereby restoring the stream, its springs, and its riparian areas. The monitoring part includes the establishment of a biological basic survey before and after the construction phase to monitor the biological and environmental impact of the restoration. A cost-benefit analysis of the project will be carried out. Information and knowledge gained will be reported through the centre for river restoration during and after the project in both a scientific as well as a more popular form.
