The biodiversity of natural forests in Latvia and its optimization

Objectif

The adjustment of local databases of forest resources to international standards, the maintenance of diversity of forest ecosystems and tree species gene pool, working out regional ecologically adapted forest management models.

In the results a sample plot network will be established, the zoning of forest will be done, optimized forest management proposed.

Latvian forest covers 2.7 million ha or 42% of the total area (in year 1923 - 24.7%). In Latvia compared to other states with intensive forestry rather large areas of natural forests and materials of general forest inventory from 1921 till nowadays have remained. Data are analyzed every decade. This information needs computer support to be able to use it for project studies and for the adjustment to international data bases.

Original forest type classification is used in forest management; on its basis within the project it is thought to analyze forest ecosystems, for the first time to do forest zoning and to form network of objects to be maintained, including in it ecosystem diversity within forest types and combining these objects with diversity maintenance of tree species populations. Latvian Norway spruce and Scots pine provenance trials ex situ show that this gene pool can be of interest not only in Latvia.

The obtained information will enable to advance models for ecologically adapted forest management and will form the basis for searching consensus between conservation and development.
