Obiettivo The aim of the project is the production of electricity using the geothermal resources of the island of S. Miguel - Acores.This project integrates the "Geothermal Project of S. Miguel" the main objectives are the development of the utilization of a natural resource, bringing in consequence the decrease of the actual dependence from the acquisition of fuel for the production of electricity. With the project as a whole, the purpose is to be autonomous in what concerns the production of electricity in a percentage of 50% of the electricity consumed in the island of S. Miguel.4 wells have been drilled, two of them in production, and this project will permit, with the energy available from the others, to produce the equivalent to 10% of the demand in S. Miguel.This project consists on the acquisition and installation of one dual ORMAT ENERGY CONVERTOR (TURBINE), and the related part of the power plant, substation and civil works, which will make available 2,2 MW net of installed power. The total project includes 4 more units, two of which are installed and operating since March 94, configuring when completed a total power of 11 MW net. The technology of the production equipment is based on the Rankine Cycle, through which is processed the transfer from thermal to mechanical energy.
