Objetivo The aim of this project is the testing of passive solar components, validation of a detailed simulation model ESP and development of simplified design and calculation tools. This work will be carried out in 10 solar test facilities in different EC countries. Work in PASSYS II is a continuation of PASSYS I which started in 1986. The participants in the project have formed four subgroups: test methodologies, model validation and development, simplified design tools and test site management. In these groups the following activities will be carried out. Work on test methodologies aims at the development of a set of reliable test methods for the determination of the thermal and solar performances of building components. The final product will comprise standardised procedures for performing and analyzing the test. The subgroup on test site management will take up the activities which in the previous project were dealt with by subgroups on: instrumentation, component selection and common PASSYS hardware. The task is to provide the necessary conditions for performing high quality tests in a standardized way. Therefore, a "User Manual" and a "Calibration Manual" for the test cells' operation will be developed. The following areas of work are to be covered : instrumentation of the test sites, data acquisition hardware and software, control and operation of the heating and cooling system, selection and design of test components, maintenance of the test cells and development of a new test cell for the testing of non vertical components; technical support to the new participation test centres. Model validation and development aims at increasing confidence in thermal modelling of buildings, through validation and further refinement. Work here is focused on empirical whole model validation with emphasis on the European reference model ESP. Under the topic simplified design tools the development of the simplified calculation tool "PASSPORT" will be completed. An effort will be made to extend this model to summer comfort assessment. Scientific support to CEN-related activities will form a part of the activities of this subgroup.
