Obiettivo Treatment of effluents (432 m3/d at 2.9 g COD/l) from a dairy company in combination with piggery manure. The plant consists of a digester with a volume of 450 m3, type upflow anaerobic filter (2.8 kg COD/m3 x d). As carrier matrix, recycled material is used, namely PVC-tubes (diam.: 5 cm; length: 6.5 cm). The effluents are feeded through a central chamber and radially distributed. Some 500 m3 biogas will be produced per day (20.8 m3/h) and used as substitute for propane gas in the company. A final polishing depuration treatment by lagooning is foreseen.After the tank level modification, we did not find any difficulty. We just introduced a small alteration in the project in some aspects regarding the localisation of the homogenisation tank, that will be on line with the grit separation channel.As previously referred, the construction system chosen by the UCAL managers was to built the plant by direct management, in order to save money.Practically, it means that the total working staff are three men and a supervisor, which contracted external services for specific works. So, the ground excavations were made by a machinery rental company, the steel pieces were moulded by another company and the concrete was laid down by trucks of a specialised company.With such organisation any change complicates the task. For instance, as referred in the previous report, the existence of high water level in the soil, created a unexpected situtation, difficult to overcome. It was solved by the rising of the digester operating level.The strong spring and autumn rains delayed the works and, actually, the digester tank is not yet completed.We point out that the digester construction is the most difficult task because of the size, shape, and the excavation works, taking us a lot time. Also the economical difficulties of Ucal company resulted in fewer personnel hired in this period of time.The remaining construction can be more easily done by the existing team.
