GENERATION OF THERMAL ENERGY FROM BIOMASS FOR DRYING PROCESSES

Objective

Substitution of fossil fuel through the use of fuel crops. Disposal of waste wood by using it for the environmentally compatible generation of energy. Reduction of emissions through indirect drying of wood chips in conjunction of incineration of v.o.c. contraining dryer exhaust air. Possible supply of district heating to the public sector.
The project is not finalized yet. The start of operating is being performed. The turbine and generator are being tested. As per schedule the project status is at the test phase now. (As per schedule of the project status is in the phase of starting operating).
Large generation of thermal energy from wood waste and biomass (straw, bark, wood chippings and sawdust) using the Dryer Gas Combustion Method with a firing performance of 73 MW.
Material is fed in by "Spreader Stoker" integrated in the boiler. A completely new feature is the in feed of the comparatively high emission of exhaust vapours into the boiler. As a result of reburning, a reduction of emission is achieved. The generated steam shall be used for drying process and for power production of electric energy for the power supply to the public sector.
Special requirements have to be met by the combustion chamber to avoid unacceptable levels of ammonia slip. To avoid such slip the remaining time at temperatures levels above 850 deg. C had to be substantially extended. This requires charges in size, shape and water tube design of the boiler.
The whole process requires exceptionally sophisticated controls since there is a strong interaction between dryer process, primary combustionand secondary combustion. An additional consideration has to be given to the fact that the SR - the NOx process performs only well within a very narrow temperature window, hence only extremely extensive control systems can handle the process satisfactorily.
The process described above of course incorporates all advantages of a cogeneration system, which means inherently high overall thermal efficiency saving energy as well as reducing pollution.
