UTILIZATION OF GEOTHERMAL WATER EFFLUENT IN SPECIAL CROPS IN WINDY AND HUMID AREAS

Objetivo

Integrated use of Geothermal Energy and Optimisation of a natural resource of high enthalpy in Acores.
Demonstration of technical, technological and economical advantages of the use of modern growing technologies and use of modern greenhouse constructions accommodated to the specific requests of local characteristic crops as well as to special climatic conditions.
Organization of a complete "know-how" transfer in order to enable an easier opening for such production and also for local production and assembling greenhouse construction materials, equipment and installations.
Project enables substitution of 415.000 kWh/y heat energy of imported fossil fuels or electricity with locally available geothermal energy, the annual consumption is equivalent to 45.75 TOE/year.
Some data is available as a result of the harvest of the 1st production cycle as :
The behaviour and the production of Cape gooseberry plants cv. Regional was studied using an hydroponic system of 2 different volcanic substrates inside 1 meter long plastic sleeves and 2 types of heating systems. Up to the moment we already harvest 121,15 kg/200 m² - 45396 fruits (corresponding to 6058 kg/ha). If one compares this yield with the one from a traditional plastic covering and unheated greenhouse (1852 kg/ha) we can conclude that there was an increase of production of 227%. Also there are no significant differences of yield between the substrates.
Also the behaviour and the production of Cape goosberry plants cv. Regional was studied using an hydroponic system of 2 different local volcanic substrates but this time in beds and 2 types of heating systems. Unfortunately we could not get good results in this assay due to excess of vegetative parts (leaves) compared to fruits. Any way we harvested 3 times getting a total yield of 22,8 kg - 6415 fruits. In November 1997 we planted again and up to this moment we have not harvest anything but it is clear that the plants on pumice substrate are stronger, taller and heavier with fruit load than the plants on bagacina.
The study of behaviour and production of pineapple adult on different locally made compost and using 2 types of irrigation systems, i.e. drip and nubelization was also developed. Up to this moment we still have no results available. Notice that this is a total biological production (not hydroponic as the other crops).
The production of 2 cultivars of melon was studied in 1 type of substrate in beds and 1 type of irrigation system. The total yield was 1501,64 kg/200 m² corresponding to 1764 fruits. If we compare once again to the yield of a traditional plastic covering and unheated greenhouse we may conclude that there was an increase in yield of 80%. Also there are no significant differences between the cultivars.
Six geothermal heated in cascade greenhouses of rather available Geo. water temperature of 90 deg. C, for growing cape gooseberry, pineapple and melon crops using high productive technologies and special greenhouses construction for windy areas (up to 170 m/h), a mini micro propagation laboratory and a special greenhouse with virus and insect free conditions.
For the first time, introduction of high productive growing technologies for protected crop cultivation of cape gooseberry and pineapple (i.e. controlled fertirrigation, and root temperature) and introduction of commercial micro propagation for these crops.
The project consists of not only energetically innovations but also of technological and organisational ones. The new approach for project design and completion results not only with energy substitution but also in improvement of productivity (for cape gooseberries between 30 and 80% improvement, for pineapple between 25% and 70% both depending on the technology in question) and introduction of new high profitable product (healthy "virus free" young plants).
10.375.000 Esc/year is the value for annual saving costs for usage of Geo. energy in heating the greenhouse complex.
