Solubilisation and interfacial properties of surfactant solutions

Objective

The aim of the project is to gain an understanding of the solubilization power of surfactant solutions. Stable dispersions of different types (microemulsions, lamellar phases) can be obtained when non-polar liquids, referred hereafter as oils, are mixed with water and surfactants. The proposed work intends to achieve a basic understanding of the solubilization properties of model systems, and in particular of their relation with the properties of the surfactant monolayer coating the interfaces between the oil and water microdomains in the disperse phases. We intend to investigate this problem in detail, both theoretically and experimentally. We will use different model systems, with alkanes and surfactants of different molecular length and water and other non-aqueous solvents. Special emphasis will be given to the gangliosides, a new class of surfactants of biological origin.
The solubilization power of surfactant solutions has been investigated. Stable dispersions of different types (microemulsions, lamellar phases) can be obtained when nonpolar liquids, referred hereafter as oils, are mixed with water and surfactants. The solubilization properties of model systems, and in particular of their relation with the properties of the surfactant monolayer coating the interfaces between the oil and water microdomains in the disperse phases, have been studied, both theoretically and experimentally. Different model systems, with alkanes and surfactants of different molecular length and water and other nonaqueous solvents, have been studied. Special emphasis was given to the gangliosides, a new class of surfactants of biological origin. Theoretical results have been obtained for phase diagrams and interfacial tension measurements of surfactant monolayer bending elastic constants on different model systems. Structure determinations of aqueous ganglioside solutions have been made. Studies of alkanes and lindane (pesticide) solubilization in model systems have been carried out.
