Objective The integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is a very attractive option for power generation with high efficiency and low emission. IGCC power plants with conventional gas purification and state of the art gas turbines are able to achieve electrical efficiencies of about. 43% LHV resulting in emissions (SO2, N0x, CO2) which are significantly lower compared to pulverised coal plants. The C02 emission is directly related to the efficiency. The efficiency of IGCC can be increased by the use of high temperature gas cleaning devices and the introduction of gas turbines with higher inlet temperatures. However this efficiency improvement may not be sufficient to meet the goals for CO2 reduction set in the European community. Therefore a new variant of an IGCC plant with CO2 control will be investigated e.g. gasification (entrained bed) with oxygen, gas purification at moderate temperature (330-400 C), CO shift/steam conversion and H2/C02 separation at the same moderate temperature and finally hydrogen combustion with air in a combined cycle. This variant could also be used in even more advanced multicycle systems (involving fuel cells or MHD). This advanced IGCC variant is complex and optimization involves gasification, gas cleaning, gas separation, combined cycle and CO2 removal. With this additional contribution a more advanced IGCC power generation plants is assessed with respect to the possibilities to combine high temperature gas cleaning techniques, high temperature shift and CO2 removal in an IGCC power plant and with respect to the performance data including costs of electricity and cost effictiviness of CO2 removal for such a power plant. By performing this additional contribution a cross link is created between the original proposal and two other relevant JOULE II projects one aiming at the development of high temperature gas cleaning for IGCC (JOU2-CT92-0231) and an other one aiming at the integration of the shift reaction and high temperature gas separation membranes (JOU2- CT92-158). The additional contribution will thus give also valuable Programme(s) IC-PECO/COPERNICUS - Scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and European non-member countries, 1992- Topic(s) 03 - CEEC participation in NON-NUCLEAR ENERGY (JOULE II) programme Call for proposal Data not available Funding Scheme CSC - Cost-sharing contracts Coordinator Universität Gesamthochschule Essen EU contribution No data Address Universitätsstraße 2-17 45141 Essen Germany See on map Total cost No data Participants (1) Sort alphabetically Sort by EU Contribution Expand all Collapse all INSTITUTE OF POWER ENGINEERING@@@ Poland EU contribution No data Address 5,ul.
