The present proposal is an extension of the original project so as to include the cooperation of scientists from Bulgaria which is one of the eligible countries to participate in this specific Community research programme.

The objective of this project is the investigation of the thermal and daylighting behavior of the building of the Old Central Market of Sofia and the application to it of the methods and the techniques used in the Athens Market project to date, so as to actually verify that the chosen concepts are applicable to different bioenvironmental conditions.

Furthermore, the proposed cooperation with scientists from Bulgaria will promote the exchange of technology transfer to third party countries and as such is worth pursuing in line with the existing project of the Athens Market and the Present proposal.

The Old Central Market of Sofia is a one-storey building, approximately 10 m high, with no internal partitions and an approximate surface area of 2.800 m2. The perimetric walls are made of brick of 0.5 m thickness and there are arched openings all around the building, with approximately 1.5 m spacing.
The roof is divided into three separate parts, one inclined in the central area and two inclined with flat tons at the side areas.
This roof complex consists of a metallic framework which is covered by corrugated zinc sheets.
The superstructures of the roofs (both inclined and flat) are completely uncovered.
The floor finishing of the hall is cement plaster.

The proposed project will be divided into the following major parts: PHASE 1 (preliminary work) which will include on site investigation, collection of data and preparation of drawings.
PHASE 2 (building simulations) which will include thermal and daylighting simulations of the Market as exists.
PHASE 3 (model construction) which will include the construction of a detailed scaled model of the Market (scale 1:50) and laboratory and open-air experiments on the model.
PHASE 4 (results) which will include the preparation of the final report of the project based on the information of all previous stages and in accordance to the results obtained from the Athens Market project.
