Development of advanced blades for integration into wind turbine systems

Objetivo

The primary aim of the project is to increase the perforrnance of windturbines by development of wingblades of advanced design based on improved materials, backed up by efficient methods of materials evaluation and blade design.

The participant 2 will contribute with additional activities on fatigue testing and accelerated fatigue testing, allowing performance at very long loading times to be evaluated.
This will include both regular and spectrum loading as well as varying amplitude loading.
The methods of non-destructive monitoring of damage will be included. The wingblade will be modelled by FEM methods and the stability and post critical deformations will be investigated.
The design of wingblades based on composite materials with light honeycomb fillers will be used.
Analysis of wingblades with thin-walled hollow structures and a spar system will be analysed.

These activities of participant 2 will extend the ongoing project, in particular within design studies and empirical design rules (concept A) and within advanced blade construction and lifetime prediction (concept B and D).
The participant 3 will contribute with additional activities on fatigue life diagrams for composite materials with and without defects under combinations of load frequencies and with activities on testing of real blade sections by the use of machines with large load capacity.
These activities of participant 3 will extend the ongoing project, in particular in relation to design rules and fatigue life prediction (concept A and B).

The overall effect of these additional proposals will be an extension and reinforcement of the basis and confidence in materials performance, materials selection and design for wingblades.
The potential for lighter and more efficient wingblades adds to the possibility of exploitation of very large wingblades.

The prioritv of the additional proposals is the following:
Priority 1: participant 2
Priority 2: participant 3
