Characteristics of Airborn Radon Decay Products in Coal
Mines
The radiation exposure in non-uranium mines has gathered
increased importance in the last years.It is governed by the deposition of the shortlived radon daughters in the lung of
miners. For a correct dose estimation to non-uranium nliners, besides the concentration of the radon progeny,the
knowledge of the size distribution of the aerosol attached and the amount of unattached radon daughters is necessary.
The aerosol conditions in mine air show a great variability
according to the type of mining (wet or dry), use ofdieselor electric engines and the ventilation of the underground
working place.
The radon and radon daughter concentration,the amount of
the unattached fraction and the size distribution of the
unattached fraction shall be measured in different polish coal mines under different environmental conditions. Radiation
doses due to the short-lived radon daughters will be
calculated and the dose conversion factors will be compared
to published results obtained in indoor air.
